Thank you for considering donating to the U.S. 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion of St. Louis, Inc. Your donation will help us run various events, including our most important event, WWII Weekend, an event that is open to the public featuring various battles, a WWII dance, and services honoring WWII veterans.

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that depends on donations, and as such we only spend money when necessary. We actively seek support and sponsorship from the community in order to subsidize our costs so that we may continue to honor WWII veterans and provide education on WWII and the sacrifices of our greatest generation.

We hold a special place in our heart for our sponsors, donors, and volunteers. They allow us to continue our service in the education and rememberance of our WWII veterans.

Sponsors are individuals and corporations who donate or grant funds for a specific event.

Donors are individuals and corporations whose donation is made without a specific event in mind for the expenditure of the funds.  Donors qualify under four levels:

Platinum Platinum $2,500 +
Gold Gold $1,000-$2,499
Silver Silver $250-$999
Bronze Bronze $1-249

Volunteers
keep our organization running, they help organize our events, set them up, keep them running smoothly, transport veterans, and so much more.  Without their selfless donation of time we would have a very difficult time maintaining our mission.

Planned Giving (Wills / Trusts)

Planned giving is a powerful way to make a lasting difference. Planned gifts offer a variety of advantages, including income tax and estate tax benefits, recognition, and the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of Americans by keeping the memories of our veterans alive long after they are unable to tell their stories.

There are a variety of ways to make a planned gift. To learn more about some of the options available, and the benefits they offer, click on the links below.

Donating Through Your Will

As you probably know, a bequest is a provision made in your will or living trust. It is the most common type of planned gift. Typically, people provide a gift for a charity by making a bequest of a specific amount of money. However, there are several alternatives that might be more beneficial to you.

  • You can leave specific property. Please keep in mind that your wishes may not be fulfilled if you sell or otherwise dispose of the property.
  • You can make a bequest for a percentage of your estate. If the size of your estate changes, your charitable gift will automatically adjust.
  • You can leave all or part of "what's left" by designating all or part of the remainder of your estate after your loved ones have been provided for.
  • Like any gift, a bequest to the U.S. 2nd Rangers can be made in memory of a loved one.

Donating Appreciated Stock or Other Assets

For US taxpayers, there are potential benefits when you make a gift of assets that have increased in value. For example, if you sell stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have appreciated in value, you may be subject to capital gains tax. However, if you donate the asset to the U.S. 2nd Rangers, you could earn a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the assets (provided you have held the asset for at least 1 year). For more information, please see our wiring instructions.

  • You can qualify for a deduction of up to 50% of adjusted gross income.
  • Excess deductions can be carried forward into as many as 5 additional tax years.

Donating Unneeded Life Insurance

Life insurance can provide an easy way to support the U.S. 2nd Rangers. Its flexibility makes it possible for nearly everyone to make a meaningful gift. For example:

  • You could name the U.S. 2nd Rangers as the beneficiary of all or part of your life insurance death benefit.
  • You can make a gift of a life insurance policy that you no longer need. For example, policies intended for a college fund or a mortgage that are no longer needed can be a great way to make a gift.
  • Instead of creating a bequest in your will, you can make a current gift and obtain a life insurance policy so that your heirs still receive their share. In this way, you could receive the income tax benefits now, and the insurance will replace the assets so that beneficiaries will still receive the same amount.

Donating IRAs or other Retirement Assets

Gifts of retirement assets can save your heirs undue tax burdens and allow you to accomplish your charitable objectives. When you bequeath retirement assets to your heirs, you are leaving them taxable assets, and they may owe income tax on the bequest. However, if you name U.S. 2nd Rangers as the beneficiary of a retirement plan, U.S. 2nd Rangers will not pay tax on the assets. This will allow you to make a larger gift than otherwise possible.

Donating Through a Charitable Trust

A charitable trust can provide payments for your spouse or another loved one for the rest of his/her life, as well as current income tax benefits. At the end of the trust term, the remaining assets would benefit U.S. 2nd Rangers and could help continue our educational efforts.

Donating to a charity is easy but knowing the rules behind your donation can be difficult to understand and knowing how to include your donations with your taxes can be even more so. Hopefully these resources will help shed some light.

What You Can and Cannot Donate

As the IRS may change the rules at any time please view the following IRS page that includes everything you need to know about charitable donations and tax deductions: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p526/index.html

Tax Forms

You must complete form 1040 Schedule A to claim your tax deduction.  If you complete the short form you are not eligible to take the deduction.

For any charitable contributions (in any amount) you can only claim a deduction if you obtain a written acknowledgment from the qualified organization.

If you claim a deduction on your return of more than $500 for all contributed property, you must attach IRS Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions, to your return.

Taxpayers donating an item or a group of similar items valued at more than $5,000 must also complete Section B of Form 8283, which requires an appraisal by a qualified appraiser.

Our 501(c)(3) Information

Please contact us for detailed information about our 501(c)(3) status and all of its required documentation.

How will my donation be used?

Your donation will help us fund the various events we host, help pay for travel for veterans to and from events, and to provide accommodations for special events and services we provide to the community.

If you would like to see a detailed report of our expenses or our current budget plan, please contact us.

Will I get a tax-deduction donation receipt for my donation?

If your donation qualifies as a deductible donation then yes, due to the 2007 IRS tax-donation receipt requirement tax receipts will be issued for all eligible donations regardless of their actual cash value for donor tax reporting purposes.

What does it mean to be a 501(c)(3) organization?

For charities, this means that they can accept contributions and offer donors a tax deduction for their gifts. For donors like you, this means your contributions are fully tax-deductible to the amount allowed by law. The email receipt you receive from the U.S. 2nd Rangers does indeed meet all the IRS requirements as a record of donation.

What counts as a charitable organization?

A charitable organization is generally defined as any nonprofit organization that is incorporated and identified by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization. These organizations have been given tax-exempt status and can accept contributions. The U.S. 2nd Rangers is a registered and active 501(c)(3) organization.

Charitable Events: For a charitable event, only a portion of the ticket value is deductible. The charity hosting the event will be able to identify the exact value of the benefits for each event.

Not all donations to nonprofits can be claimed as charitable deductions, even if the organization is registered as a nonprofit. Check with the IRS on whether or not an organization in question can receive charitable deductions.

How can I take a deduction for my donation?

To claim a deduction, you will need to fill out a 1040 Form, which is available through the IRS website, and itemize your deductions on Schedule A. If you fill out the short form or take standard deductions, you cannot claim your contributions.

Do I need a receipt for donations I make?

Due to donation fraud, the IRS currently requires receipts for all cash and product donations in order to claim the deduction on your taxes. Send a copy of your receipt with your tax return (retain the original).

Do I need any acknowledgement for donations under $250?

Yes. Due to fraud the IRS requires receipts for all donations, regardless of their value. Be sure to keep the canceled check, credit card statement, or email receipt sent to you from the U.S. 2nd Rangers. Always note the donation amount, the date of the contribution, and the name of the charity.

For donations what information does the receipt need?

The receipt needs to record the donation amount, the date the donation was made, and the name of the charity, as well as a written acknowledgement from the organization of the receipt of the funds. The IRS should acknowledge an email receipt as an acceptable record of donation, but to be certain, always consult your tax advisor.

When you donate to the U.S. 2nd Rangers, your email acknowledgement will provide the amount, transaction date, and the charity name - all of the items the IRS wants you to keep a record of when you donate.

Can I receive a tax deduction for a donation to an overseas nonprofit organization?

If you want to take a deduction for your donation, be sure to donate to a charity registered in the United States. That doesn't mean you can't give to an organization that has an international scope, such as CARE or Save the Children. You just have to make sure the charity is registered in the U.S. – as both of these charities are – if you want to take the deduction.

Can I take a deduction for volunteering my time and services?

You cannot deduct the value of time or services to a charitable organization but you can deduct any hard costs associated with that volunteering such as the gas or bus fare it costs to get there. For example, if you volunteer at WWII Weekend and have to purchase a specific uniform for your post, you can deduct the cost of buying and cleaning the uniform. The IRS will let you deduct any out-of-pocket expenses you acquire in the course of volunteering.
